While the main gurdy is on a well deserved maintan While the main gurdy is on a well deserved maintanence retreat (at luthier Søren Vinther Røgen), and you still need to crank out some tunes, the old and archaic "groddalira" is perfect! This gurdy is build by the legendary pioneering Swedish luthier Leif Eriksson, who helped re-popularize this wonderful instrument in the 1970s. It is made after an old historical instrument from the 1700s, now displayed in the Museum of Gotland. The opening melody from one our own songs (historically Entre Av’ e Éva gran departiment’ há / Cantiga No 60) is the perfect tune to showcase this instruments' rough and olden sound!

They spent their days in prayer and contemplation, sometimes becoming spiritual adviser to the people on the outside. One famous anchorite is Julian of Norwich (depicted above in a stained glass window in the cathedral of Norwich). She wrote 'Revelations of Divine Love', which is considered to be the earliest surviving book in English written by a woman."

The instrument seen in the last post is a Gittern, The instrument seen in the last post is a Gittern, a small plucked instrument with four courses (double strings). The earliest mention of the Gittern dates back to around 1270. At first it was played for nobles and courts, but from the 1330s it started showing up in taverns among the common folk. In 1381, in London, three friends were arrested for causing a racket with their gitterns, ending them up in jail for a month! #medievalmetal #gittern #doommetal
